Using the Eyesight, Improperly

  • Every situation has an effect on the heart.  In order to have a calm heart, we have to eradicate all the triggers that create unrest
  • One of the most dangerous immoral characteristics a person can have is to use the eyesight incorrectly
  • Even though arrogance is one of the last diseases to leave the human heart, this disease is also one of the last diseases to leave
  • When a person initially starts utilizing the eyes improperly, he doesn’t feel the disease creeping into his heart.  However, the disease will increase and take firm root in the heart
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  The eye itself is a poisonous arrow, from the arrows shaytan uses

*   When we look at somebody , we can give them ‘ayn (the evil eye)and we affect them spiritually

*   At the minimum, using the eyesight improperly will poison our own heart

*   Allah SWT has covered the beauty of the opposite gender and made it apparent only to those people that Allah SWT has given permission

  • Using the eyesight improperly will:

*   Affect both our spiritual and physical state

*   Remove the sweetness of iman from our hearts

*   Take away pleasure from our salah and in other things we do

*   Become a hurdle in the acceptance of our tawbah because of the lack of conviction we have in refraining from using the eyesight improperly when we repent

*   Remove the barakah from our ilm

  • Shaytan puts us into a hypnotic state where even a person who is not good looking will become good looking

*   During this moment, our heart will be in complete darkness

*   Only turning to Allah will save us at that moment

*   Maulana Rumi (RAH) stated this state is very dangerous and is one where the heart is not alert and covered in darkness.  When Allah SWT frees us from this disease, our heart goes to a state of warning, where we are completely alert of what is happening

  • Using the eyesight improperly is a major sin.  A person who is persistent upon it (does not think it to be wrong and does not do tawbah from it), will be classified as a fajir and a fasiq

*   A person who is persistent upon it will not attain even a small portion of Allah SWT’s closeness

*   We should seek tawbah for using our eyesight in the incorrect manner and ask Allah to give us the tawfiq and guidance to use our eyesight in the correct manner

  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  You have the first glance, but you don’t have the second one
  • When a person continuously looks out, they never look at the beauty of their spouse and will be neglectful of them.

Cure:

  • Allah SWT says:    قُل لِّلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ يَغُضُّواْ مِنۡ أَبۡصَـٰرِهِمۡ وَيَحۡفَظُواْ فُرُوجَهُمۡ‌ۚ    ( Tell the believing men that they must lower their gazes and guard their private parts Surah 24, Verse 30)
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  If you are outside and you feel desire by looking at somebody, immediately come home to your wife
  • Worry about it
  • For children that have not reached puberty:

*   As parents, we should protect our children from the onslaught of shaytan of this disease by switching off the TV and videos

*   We should organize our children’s time in a manner that they do not have time for such things

*   We should surround them with good company and good friends

*   We should marry them off in a timely fashion so that when their bodies mature they are able to fulfill their desires in a halal manner

*   We should make this dua’ for our children:      رَبَّنَا هَبۡ لَنَا مِنۡ أَزۡوَٲجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعۡيُنٍ۬ وَٱجۡعَلۡنَا لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا         (“Our Lord, Give us, from our spouses and our children, comfort of eyes, and make us heads of the God-fearing  Surah 25, Verse 74)

  • For people who have reached puberty:

*   Sit in muraqabah

*   Go to the ulema in our area and discuss these issues with them

*   Read Durood Shareef, recite Quran, pray tahajjud

  • By reciting Quran and remembering Allah, the light of truth will come into our heart, which will extinguish the fire of desires.  Maulana Ruma (RAH) states:  The fire of the nafs can only be extinguished by the light of Allah SWT’s remembrance
  • Some people when faced with this situation will think “Let me do this so that my desire will decrease.”  We should not be deceived by this because each time we perform this act, we are actually increasing our desire.  At that moment the desire might decrease, but in reality it increases
