Taking a friend other than Allah

(And do not incline towards the wrongdoers, lest the Fire should catch you, and you have no supporters other than Allah, then you should not be helped Surah 11, Verse 113)
  • Allah SWT tells us our hearts should lean towards the fuqarah.  The opposite of this would be leaning towards those who are oppressors
  • Imam Naysapoori (RAH) explained the word “ruku” (inclining) in this verse as being content with the injustices that the other people of that group do
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  Surely, in the body there is a small piece of flesh; if it is good, the whole body is good, and if it is corrupted, the whole body is corrupted, and that is surely the heart
    • Rukun is a state of the heart
  • Imam Ghazali also mentions an explanation as glorifying the ways of those who are unjust.
    • We should be careful when glorifying/emulating those who people who refuse to accept and acknowledge Allah SWT’s presence.
    • To associate/join in those transgressions is also incorrect
  • This inkling towards those who are unjust is the biggest deterrent to commanding the good and forbidding the evil because we are now holding that person in a high state and we would thus be put in a position of weakness
    • The companions had an internal strength and they realized true benefit is in following the Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ)
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends
    •  A person who has a friendship with the fuqarah is a friend of Allah
    • A person who takes a friend other than the fuqarah has taken a friend other than Allah
  • ‏اللَّهُمَّ ‏ ‏مُصَرِّفَ ‏ ‏الْقُلُوبِ ‏ ‏صَرِّفْ ‏ ‏قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ ‏ (Dua of Prophet (): Allāhumma Musarrif al-Qulūbi Sarrif Qulūbana ‘alā Tā’atika   O Allah, Turner of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience)
    • The heart is called qalb in Arabic because its state continuously changes
    • A person’s heart can change between obedience and disobedience
    • As the heart learns more, its evolves into another state and its understanding increases
  • Sitting with those who are humble and fuqarah will cool down the fire of your heart
    • Keeping the company of people who perform evil acts will open the door to making a friend other than Allah SWT.  Doing this will expose yourself to corruption and sin, and you will corrupt your deen and your heart
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said a man is upon the deen of his friend (whoever in his heart he holds dear)
    • A person should be extremely mindful about who he befriends
  • We will never be free and strong-hearted until we don’t break these anchors and chains from our hearts and free our hearts from inclining towards those who cross the boundaries set by Allah
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said “This dunya is a prison for the believers and a paradise for the disbeliever” because the non-believer allows his heart to go in any direction he wishes, whereas a believer cannot allow his heart to go in any direction he wishes. Even the thoughts of the heart have to be rectified
    • Nothing being inclined towards the ways of those who are unjust comes from a position of strength
    • Our weakness is because we are inclined towards those things that lead us towards the wrong direction
    • Without contemplation, there can be no progress and no self-rectification
