Lust

(Allah is the Protector of those who believe. He brings them out of the depths of darkness into the light. As for those who disbelieve, their friends are the Rebels. They bring them out from the light into the depths of darkness. Those are people of the Fire. There they will remain forever.  Surah 2, Verse 257)

*   When a person is obedient to Allah SWT, a noor (light) forms in the heart.  When a person is disobedient to Allah SWT, darkness is created in the heart

*   When a person uses their gaze in an incorrect manner, it creates a darkness in the heart

*   Sin removes the light of worship

  • A person cannot taste the halawa tul-iman (sweetness of faith) of obedience until there is prolonged period of absence from sin

*   A man’s heart can become so sick that he is not aware of the existence of the light

*   A person who has the light can feel a difference inside of him from his dhikr, salah, fasting, etc

*   Story: Shaykh Yaqoob Nanuti (RAH) was invited to a meal and accepted the invitation.  He learned later that the man’s earnings were not lawful.  And then he felt the darkness in his heart for a long period thereafter and it produced sinful thoughts and inclinations towards forbidden deeds.  The reason he felt the difference is because when the sheet is clean, a white cloth, you will notice a black dot on it.  If the sheet is already dark, a black dot on it will not be noticed

*   Often we do not feel the difference between obedience and disobedience because we have not had a sustained period of obedience.  The example is similar to a sick person who is prescribed medication by a doctor.  If the patient does not take his medicine for the given time period along with abstaining from certain things, he will not recover.  Once he is healthy again, he knows what it feels like to be unhealthy

*   The Prophet (ﷺ)’s spiritual strength was such that it would sustain him (ﷺ)

*   During Ramadan, noor builds within us and gives us strength

  • When a person casts an evil glance, he will not have any worldly gains from the effect of his worship on that day
  • Hadith:  If a man goes to his house and looks at his wife with a loving glance and she returns his smile, then Allah SWT will look at them with mercy
  • The existence of lust within a person is not evil itself.  Using the lust unlawfully, in an incorrect manner, is evil

Solution

  •  A human’s desire and lust either inclines him towards good or evil and a person makes a choice between the two.  When we are inclined towards evil, we should immediately incline ourselves towards the opposite because it is our choice

*   Shaytan has no authority over us, other than waswasa (whispering)

*   All actions are voluntaryWe should make a strong intention that from this day onward we are not going to displease Allah.  If we slip, we make istaghfaar and then renew our intention again.  Sometimes an intention can be so strong that it can prevent us from continuing a sin we have been performing for such a long time that it was an addiction

  • We should not think that it is not within our power to give up something.  It is in our power and until we do not think it is in our power, we will not give it up

*   We should use our courage to make a firm resolve to give up that thing, making dua to Allah to give us the necessary strength

*   Sometimes when a person leaves something, there will be difficulty and problems.  Remember that there is difficulty in trying to go against one’s nafs

*   Initially it will be difficult, but gradually the habit will fade

  • We should abandon the joy that we feel when looking at forbidden things
(He (Yusuf) said, “My Lord, the prison is dearer to me than what these women invite me to do. If You do not turn their guile away from me, I shall get inclined towards them and shall be among the ignorant.”  Surah 12, Verse 33)
  • Hadith:  There was a time of great famine and difficulty came upon us.  My wife asked me to go to the Prophet (ﷺ), so I went to Him.  When I came to the Prophet (ﷺ), He was reading the following:  A person who asks Allah, keep me chaste, then Allah will keep him chaste.  A person who asks Allah to make him independent from others, then Allah SWT will make him independent.  Whoever asks Us from something, We will not hoard it in ourselves.

*   The sahabi left thinking why should I ask the Prophet (ﷺ) when Allah SWT says to ask Him

  • Strength will develop through its use

*   When a weak person exercises, he becomes stronger.  Similarly, to strengthen our courage, we have to use our courage

*   We should develop a little courage, stop a bit of sinning, and slowly our strength and courage will develop

  • We should make a conscious effort to not look at what is forbidden

*   Sometimes the first sip of staying away from sin is a bitter one, but then it becomes an acquired taste.  After some time we will begin to feel the sweetness of it

  • Allah SWT is Modest and He feels shy when His slave looks at something that He has forbidden
  • All beauty is subservient to the beauty of Allah

Contentment

  • We are not content anymore because we look around and think the grass is greener on the other side
  • We will never have peace until we are content with ourselves
  • We have more mental and spiritual diseases now than ever before and its having an effect on our health.  Sinning and our environment are having an effect on our health, the quality of our happiness and the quality of our life.
  • A person shouldn’t be fooled by another person’s outward happiness, wealth or success
