Daily Adhkaar

  • Astaghfaar (seeking forgiveness)

*    فَقُلۡتُ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ إِنَّهُ ۥ كَانَ غَفَّارً۬ا    (So I said, “Pray to your Lord for your forgiveness.  Indeed He is Very-Forgiving.)  يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّدۡرَارً۬ا    (And He will cause the heavens to rain upon you in abundance)  وَيُمۡدِدۡكُم بِأَمۡوَٲلٍ۬ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ جَنَّـٰتٍ۬ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ أَنۡہَـٰرً۬ا    (And will help you with riches and sons, and will cause gardens to grow for you, and cause rivers to flow for you  Surah 71, Verses 10-12)

*   The Prophet (ﷺ) did not have any sins and would still excessively seek forgiveness from Allah

*   Seeking forgiveness itself is an act of worship

*   A person should seek forgiveness at least 100 times in the morning and in the evening, focusing on quality over quantity

Salawaat (salutations)

*   The Prophet (ﷺ) said If you were to dedicate your time to send salutations upon me, it will suffice you for every difficulty that afflicts you

*   A person cannot become closer to Allah SWT until he does not practice the Sunnah and attain the love of the Prophet (ﷺ), which comes from abundant salutations upon the Prophet (ﷺ)

*   The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  A person cannot become a complete believer until I do not become more beloved to him than his father, his children, and all of mankind

*   The Prophet (ﷺ) is given such importance that our salvation depends on Him (ﷺ). When a person is lowered into the grave, he is asked: What is your deen, who is your Lord, and who is this man?  At that time, the Prophet (ﷺ) is shown to them in the grave.  A man will not be able to recognize the Prophet (ﷺ) in the grave if he was not following His (ﷺ) teachings.

Recitation of the Quran

*   The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  Attain blessings from the Quran.  Verily it is the kalaam of Allah

*   The more Quran we read, the stronger our attachment will be with Allah SWT

*   The minimum a person can do is to open the Quran with love and say, ‘Ya Allah, I believe in everything that You have revealed.’

  • A day should not pass in which we do not do astaghfaar, send salutations upon the Prophet (ﷺ), and recite Quran
  • There are duas that we can read throughout the day, such as when waking up, before prayer, after prayer, going to sleep, going to the masjid, etc.  The person who reads ayatul kursi (Surah 2, Verse 255) after salah, the only thing that separates him and paradise is his transfer (ie, his death)
  •  We have to give priority to Allah SWT and to the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ).  When a person puts their mind to something, they will do it

Removing Vile Characteristics:

  • Within a human being there are certain vile characteristics, radhail
  • Shaykh Maulana Ashraf Thanvi (RAH) says one should correct the vile characteristics inside of them, one by one.  We should start with the worst characteristic first and once that has been controlled, we can seek the cure for the next one
  • We should not wait for all of the bad traits in our heart to be corrected at once or for the bad traits to be removed completely because that is impossible

*   Certain traits within us are needed, for example anger.  If a person suppresses his anger to such an extent that he is not able to use it, he would not be able to survive

*   If a person can control his anger, then he can use it when appropriate

  • Some other vile characteristics to be cured are jealousy and lust

*   To use your lust in the correct place is commendable.  To use it in the wrong place is sinful

*   Until there is no restraint, a person will not be able to do it

  • The clash of good and bad within a person raises one’s ranks

*   If a person has difficulty praying salah or giving sadaqa, etc, but he forces himself to, Allah SWT will reward him for that and his rank will be raised

*   When we are feeling lazy about doing our daily adhkaar, and we force ourselves to do it, Allah SWT will reward us for this and raise our ranks
