Courage

  • Allah SWT has created in man the quality of courage and its opposite, laziness

*   The amount of courage that we want to use, is the amount that we have

*   There is no limit to a person’s laziness

*   The cure to laziness is to be courageous

  • Nothing is this world can be achieved without courage

*   The accomplishments, religious or worldly, of men in this world have courage behind them

*   Even a sin can only be done through courage

*   Allah SWT will bless the courage of a believer who works hard to submit himself and avert from disobedience

*   When a child first learns to walk, he initially takes a step and then stumbles.  If the child gives up hope and gives into cowardliness by not trying again, he will never learn to walk.  But if the child is courageous and tries repeatedly, eventually he will be able to walk.  Allah SWT has given us things we have to do (e.g. praying, what to eat, how to dress, etc).  We should move forward courageously in doing them, even if we stumble along the way

  •    لَا تُكَلَّفُ نَفۡسٌ إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَا‌ۚ    (Nobody is obligated beyond his capacity  Surah 2, Verse 233)

*   Allah SWT knows our vessel and how much we can handle

*   We are put under certain circumstances according to the strength and courage we can show and have

  • Hadith:  For every sickness, Allah SWT has given a cure

*   The cure for cowardliness is courage

*   If Allah SWT has placed us in a situation where we feel cowardly, remember that Allah SWT has also placed courage within that same heart at that same time

*   The tasks that we are asked to do are within our ability, we just have to show courage

*     يَـٰٓأَيُّہَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ   (Oh believers, fear Allah, and be in the company of the truthful  Surah 9, Verse 119).  Staying in the company of the courageous will make us courageous

  • The sahaba achieved great feats with courage
  • Some people want to become shuyookh and awliya overnight.  Our teachers, parents, and friends can push us, but it is up to us to make sure that our mechanism (courage) comes on inside so that we can continue with the good acts that we are supposed to be doing.
  • We cannot become close to Allah, stop sinning, and become a good person without courage

Anger:

  • Maulana Ashraf Thanvi states he found in a hadith that if you have excused yourself from a beggar three times, but the beggar persists stubbornly, then there is no fear in scolding him
  • Shaykh Masihullah Khan says that it is a sin to display anger unjustly, while it is proper to display anger when necessary.  However, one has to teach oneself not to scold anyone unjustly, so to practice this he must not show anger even when it is allowed.  When he has sufficient control over his anger, then he may display it when needed
  • Hadith:  If you hear that a mountain has moved on its place, then you can confirm that.  But do not confirm when you hear that someone has moved away from his manners

*   A person has many diseases within himself, such as anger, lust, and laziness.  He can suppress them, but he cannot get rid of them

(Say, “Everyone acts in his own style. So, your Lord knows best which one is better guided in his way.”  Surah 17, Verse 84)

*   Each one of us is unique, physically and internally.  Even with these differences, Islam unites us

Greed:

  •   وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفۡسِهِۦ فَأُوْلَـٰٓٮِٕكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ    (The one who is saved from his own greed, they are the successful ones  Surah 64,Verse 16)
  • Hadith:  If the child of Adam had a valley of gold, he will want more
  • There is no limit to greed
  • We have to be courageous to stop our greed
  • Hadith:  The dust of a person who goes in the path of Allah cannot gather with the fire of Jahannam.  In a similar fashion, greed and iman cannot gather in the heart of a believer

*   Greed will destroy our iman

*   Greed will lead us to many sins (e.g. stealing, zina, back-biting, riba, etc)

  • Abdur-Rahman Ibn ‘Uwf (RAH) was making tawwaf one day and the only dua he was making was:  Allahumma qini shuhha nafsi  (Oh Allah, save me from my own greed).  Sa’id Ibn Jubbar (RAH) asked him, ‘You are only asking for this?’  Abdu-Rahman Ibn ‘Uwf (RAH) responded, ‘If I am saved from the greed of my nafs, I will not steal, I will not commit adultery, etc, etc.’

*   Abdur-Rahman ‘Ibn ‘Uwf (RAH) was given glad tidings of Jannah by the Prophet ()

*   When he used to come home, he would throw his money to one side and it would pile up.  He used to tell his wife we have too much money.  She would start distributing it and come to him at fajr saying I have distributed everything.  He would say Alhamdulillah and be happy.

  • Hadith:  A person will become free of greed if he gives zakat, he entertains guests, and he gives when it is difficult to give

*   Greed is when we go beyond the limits of Allah

*   Entertaining guests is when we have a generous spread

  • Hadith:  Beware of greed because this greed is the one that destroyed the nations before you
