Arrogance

(Or (their deeds) are like layers of darkness in a vast deep sea overwhelmed by a wave, above which there is another wave, above which there are clouds – layers of darkness, one above the other. When one puts forth his hand, he can hardly see it; and the one to whom Allah does not give light can have no light at all. (Did you not realize that purity of Allah is proclaimed by all those in the heavens and the earth, and by the birds with their wings spread out? Everyone knows one’s own (way of) praying (to Allah) and one’s own (way of) proclaiming Allah’s purity. And Allah knows well what they do  Surah 24, Verse 41)
    • When someone is in darkness, even if the truth is in front of them they cannot see it.  When someone is arrogant, they cannot see the truth even if it is right in front of them
    • Immediately after mentioning darkness, Allah SWT mentions His remembrance because remembering Allah SWT is a means of removing this darkness from our hearts
  • Arrogance is the cancer of spiritual diseases and manifests itself in different forms.  It is a direct result of ingratitude and is the most destructive of all diseases.  No human is free from it and we must all strive to remove it.  This disease has been highlighted in the Quran and by the Prophet (ﷺ) to emphasize its danger.
(I shall keep away from My verses those who show arrogance on the earth with no right to do so. Even if they were to see every sign, they would not believe in it; and if they see the Path of guidance, they do not take it as their way; and if they see the path of misguidance, they would take it as their way. That is because they have rejected Our signs, and have been neglectful of them Surah 7, Verse 146)
    • Outcome 1 of arrogance:  Arrogance causes darkness in the heart so the person will not be able to see the truth
    • An arrogant person will not be able to see Allah’s signs, which are His favors upon us and everything around us.
(They sought final decision (by demanding the divine scourge), and (thus) every obstinate tyrant failed.  Surah 14, Verse 15)
    • Outcome 2:  An arrogant person will fail
(Invariably, Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal. Surely, He does not like the arrogant  Surah 16, Verse 23)
    • Outcome 3:  An arrogant person is deprived of Allah’s love
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  A person will continue thinking high of himself until he is included with the disbelievers.  The punishment that shall afflict the disbelievers shall afflict him as well.
    • Outcome 4:  Iman can be snatched away from the heart.  Shaytan is a clear example of that
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No one will enter Paradise in whose heart is an atom’s weight of arrogance and no one will enter Hell in whose heart is an atom’s weight of faith.”
    • When a person passes away, they will feel fear when being buried, when awaiting the questioning in the grave, when the horn is blown for resurrection, when awaiting his book of deeds, when awaiting his scale of deeds, and when crossing the sirat, amongst other occasions.  The feeling of fear in these situations will also remove sins from that person
    • After crossing the sirat, we will arrive at a river/lake. After we enter and exit from this river/lake, we will have been completely purified from all filth and impurities
    • Some people will cross the sirat at lightning speed
    • “No one will Enter Hell….” in this hadith means permanently.  If Allah wills, a person may be punished in the Hell-fire before being removed
  • Hadith:   Then Allah, Exalted and Great, would say: The angels have interceded, the apostles have interceded and the believers have interceded, and no one remains (to grant pardon) but the Most Merciful of the merciful. He will then take a handful from Fire and bring out from it people who never did any good and who had been turned into charcoal, and will cast them into a river called the river of life, on the outskirts of Paradise. They will come out as a seed comes cut from the silt carried by flood. You see it near the stone or near the tree. That which is exposed to the sun is yellowish or greenish and which is under the shade is white. They said: Messenger of Allah! it seems as if you had been tending a flock in the jungle. He (the Holy Prophet) said: They will come forth like pearls with seals on their necks. The inhabitants of Paradise would recognize them (and say): Those are who have been set free by the Compassionate One who has admitted them into Paradise without any (good) deed that they did or any good that they sent in advance. Then He would say: Enter the Paradise; whatever you see in it is yours. They would say: O Lord, Thou hast bestowed upon us (favors) which Thou didst not bestow upon anyone else in the world. He would say: There is with Me (a favor) for you better than this. They would say: O our Lord, which thing is better than this? He would say: It is My pleasure. I will never be angry with you after this
    • Allah SWT will invite the Prophet (ﷺ) to give intercession.  The Prophet (ﷺ) will give his intercession and then others who are allowed to intercede will give their intercession.  Allah SWT will order that anyone in whose heart is good to the weight of a particle to be moved.  After everyone has given their intercession, then Allah SWT will give His intercession.
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) recognizes his (ﷺ) ummah because when we send salutations upon him (ﷺ), they are presented to him (ﷺ) along with the name of the person sending the salutations
(Your Lord has said, “Call Me, I will respond to you. Definitely those who show arrogance against worshipping Me shall enter Jahannam (Hell) with disgrace  Surah 40, Verse 60)
    • There is a separate section in the Hell-Fire for the arrogant
    • Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrates the Prophet (ﷺ) said, Allah SWT said:  Arrogance is My upper garment and greatness is My lower garment.  Whoever argues with Me in any of these two, I will throw him into the fire of Jahannam and I will not care
    • Abu Salamah ibn Abdul Rahman said:  Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) met Abdullah ibn Umar on the Mount of Safa.  They spoke to each other and then Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) left.  Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) remained and was crying.  He was asked, “Why are you crying of O Abu Abdul Rahman?”  He said, “This man who just left [Abdullah ibn Amr] claims he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) say, ‘A person who has a mustard seed of arrogance in his heart, Allah SWT will throw him face first into the fire of Jahannam.’
  • Sulayman ibn Dawood (AHS) said to the birds, the humans, jinn, and animals, “Come out.”  200,000 humans and 200,000 jinn came out.  He put them on his throne and took them up into the heavens until they could all hear the angels doing tasbeeh in the heavens.  Then he came down with them until their feet touched the ocean water.  A voice from the heaven’s called, “If there was in Sulayman’s AHS heart an atom’s weight of arrogance, it would have caused him to be taken down as far as he was raised up.”
(Remind them of) the Day when We will say to Jahannam (Hell), “Are you filled up?” and it will say, “Are there some more?”   Surah 50, Verse 30)
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Jannah and Jahannam had a debate.  The Hell-fire said, ‘I have been given preference because all the arrogant and tyrannical people are with me.’  Paradise said, ‘How is it that only the weak and humble people are with me?’  Allah said to Paradise, ‘You are My mercy.  I show My mercy through you for whoever I will.”  He said to the fire, ‘You are My wrath.  I punish through you whoever I will.’  Allah said to both, ‘And I promise both of you that I will fill you.’
    • According to some narrations, after all the people of Jannah have entered, there will be some unoccupied parts.  Allah SWT will then create a creation to dwell in that part of Paradise.
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “On the Day of Resurrection a neck will stretch forth from Hell.  It will have two eyes to see, two ears to hear, and a tongue to speak. It will say, “I have been appointed to take care of three types of people: every arrogant tyrant, every person who called on some deity other than Allah (swt) and those who made pictures.”
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A miserly person, a tyrant, and a person with bad morals will not enter Paradise.”
