Abstaining from the Dunya

  • There are many verses in the Quran regarding leaving of the world and its examples.  The majority of the Quran covers the topic of leaving the evil of the world and to direct the creation from the dunya to Allah SWT and to call them towards the Hereafter.  This is also the main purpose of the Prophets, to connect the creation with Allah SWT.  The method of connection of a servant to Alalh is dictated by the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (ﷺ)
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) passed by the carcass of a dead goat and asked, “Do you see this dead goat?  Did it bring use to its owners?”  The companions said, “What would be its use?  They have cast it aside.”  He (ﷺ) said, “By the One who has control over my life, the world is more worthless in the sight of Allah than this goat upon its owners.  If the dunya had a value equal to the value of a wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah, He would not give a disbeliever a sip of water.”
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  The dunya is a prison for the believers and a Paradise for the disbeliever.
    • The dunya is a prison because the believer is not able to do what he wants.  A believer has to follow the system defined by Allah
    • In Jannah there will be no system.  We will meet Allah every Friday at Jummah time.  We will be sitting on different types of seats and thrones and each person will think they have the best seat.  The clouds will come and shower down scent upon the gathering.  The scent will make us more alert and observant for when Allah reveals Hiimself.  Then Allah SWT will tell Dawood AHS to make the remembrance of Allah.  In the dunya, when Dawood AHS would make the remembrance of Allah, the birds would stop in the sky to listen and the mountains would do dhikr with him.  Dawood AHS’s recitation will increase our zeal to see Allah.  Allah SWT will then remove the barriers between Him and His creation so we can see Him.  The Prophet (ﷺ) taught, in Jannah, we won’t need to crowd around when looking at Allah SWT.  We’ll be able to see Him as one sees the full moon.  Allah will be clear in each person’s sight.  The effect of seeing Allah will be so immense, that it will change how we look and our radiance.  When we go back to our spouse, they will say we look more radiant than we did before
    • One of the greatest losses for the disbelievers will be not seeing Allah
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  The world and everything in it is cursed, except what is done for the sake of Allah
    • Anything we do, small or big, should be for Allah SWT
    • When we spend on our families for the sake of Allah, that spending becomes an act of worship
    • When we do something for Allah, it won’t harm us
  • Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (RA) narrates the Prophet (ﷺ) said:  A person who loves his place in this world, he will surely harm his Hereafter.  A person who loves the Hereafter, he will harm his dunya.  Give preference to that which is everlasting (the Hereafter) over something that is going to perish (the dunya)
  • The Prophet (ﷺ) said:  The love of the dunya is the root of all evil
    • Most crimes are committed because of a love of the world
    • If we want to reform ourselves, we have to connect with Allah
    • The Prophet (ﷺ) and the sahaba connected people to Allah
    • Rectifying and nurturing ourselves and people takes time.  It took the Prophet (ﷺ) twenty three years
  • Zayd ibn Arqam (RA) said:  We were sitting with Abu Bakr (RA) and he asked for something to drink.  Water and honey were brought to him.  When he put it close to his mouth, he started crying and his companions started crying.  The people became quiet and he tried drinking again, but he started crying again.  This was repeated to such an extent we thought we would not be able to ask him why he was crying.  Abu Bakr became quiet and wiped his eyes and the companions asked, ‘What made you cry?”  Abu Bakr replied, “I was with the Prophet (ﷺ) and saw him pushing away something, but I did not see anybody with him.  I asked, ‘Oh messenger of Allah, who were you repelling from yourself?’  He (ﷺ) said, ‘The dunya came to me in a form and I said to it go away from me.  It went back and said, ‘You have repelled me, but those after you will not be able to push me away.’ “
    • The water and honey reminded Abu Bakr of the dunya and blessings
    • We have countless blessings in our lives every day
  • One day the Prophet (ﷺ) stood upon a place the people used to throw their trash.  He (ﷺ) said, “Come towards the dunya.”  He (ﷺ) took a decayed rag and a decayed bone and said, “This is the dunya.”  This was an indication that this dunya will become tatters like the rag and our bodies will become decayed bones
